Gobbleins Overview by Seagullpendragon Gobbleins Overview by Seagullpendragon
A species overview for Gobbleins.

Some more facts that aren't included in the diagram:

Poison abilities will wreck a Gobblein. Some are more resistant than others. Earth and Fire Gobbleins have a better resistance and Tree and Water Gobbleins are very susceptible. No one knows how Herb Gobbleins are affected because no one dares attack one to find out.

Acid abilities are also harmful to Gobbleins but not as much as poison, with peppers being completely immune to it.

Gobbleins cannot mate with anyone outside of their species although that doesn't mean they can't have meaningful relationships with others.

Gobbleins can also be the victims of many different diseases and vermin that affect plants such a root rot and bark beetles.

Sanctuary Custodians are cycled out of the roll every five years through a roster. It's to make sure that every member gets out to see the world, lest spending time within the sanctuary makes them misanthropic.

Grook is the Gobblein native language, although it varies in dialect from Affinity to Affinity. Herbs speak True Grook, and are trained to understand the other dialects. Gobbleins also speak Plant (but I forgot to add it to the diagram...)

Gobbleins are mainly herbivores, only eating the fruit and vegetables they grow, but some do eat meat such as Vines who eat fish on occasion, and Trees who eat bugs.

I'm really curious, this is a reaaally odd question but...
What are their marriage ceremony's like and do they have any special holidays?

it's not odd at all!

Marriage ceremonies are usually between two Gobbleins, overseen by an Herb (which is why most marriages happen when Herbs come to town, mainly so they can be documented). There are minor parts to the marriage ceremony that I need to flesh out but the most important part is that those being bound in union must eat a piece of each other's fruit/vegetable. It's like the Gobblein version of exchanging a kiss and saying "I do."

Concerning holidays most of them are centred in planting and harvesting. There is the planting festival during spring where the community has a large feast on half of what remains in their winter stores so they have the added energy to spend the day planting the crops/tending the trees/re-fertilizing. Summer is the water festival where they pretty much spend the day playing in the water, eating the early crop and partaking in spices brought by the Herb visitors (who make it out to communities around this time). Fall is obviously the harvest festival, when everything is harvested and preserved and a large feast is had is celebration. Winter is the sun festival, where the community will light fires and have a small feast to lift their spirits and try and beckon the sun.

Not all races celebrate these holidays like Peppers and Vines because they never really have a winter. Some have holidays unique to their culture alone, like the Trees who have the blossom festival where they all get drunk... but I need to better flesh them out haha.

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one to think of putting some sort of decoration between their horns! My other Tree Gobblein (Pompei's sister, Pim) has a pendant that helps slow down her tree growing process :P

A pendant that slows down growth! That would make sense since some of the younger Tree generation probably don't want to become immobile as they get older. Makes me think of modern day contraception... betacha it's frowned upon by the older Trees (like who doesn't want to be an Elder??).

Hmmm now I'm thinking about a Tree Gobblein culture that clips back their branches for cosmetic reasons kinda like bonsais!

Yeah!! You are so creative! But Pim has a disease where her tree is growing too fast for her age and is growing all over instead of just her back side. The branches grew over and into her eyes so she is blind. She is basically turning exactly into the tree itself. So she got a pendant to help slow the growth some.

Oh no! Poor Pim!

But that's also really cool! I never though about the possibility of the plants on a Gobblein's back being volatile, like perhaps turned ill by a disease or a birth anomaly? I always figured everything was balance and hunky dorry when it came to the symbiosis between Plant and Gobblein...

Thank you so much for sharing you character ideas! This is giving me so much to think about!
